Brief Report on APC Symposium Tokyo, 2017

On December 10, 2017, The APC Symposium in Tokyo was held at the Musashino University, Ariake Campus (Room 308, Building No.1) with the participation of more than 50 people who joined this symposium despite the fact that it happened to be in the afternoon of a holiday near the end of the year.

The participants included foreign guests from Hungary and Hawaii, U.S.A.
The purpose of holding the APC symposium was that we, the proposal team of APC, could hear many opinions and views of the discussants as well as the general participants to the symposium so that we could learn from them how to make our proposal more persuasive.

As most of you may already know, the APC proposal aims at establishing an international research, education, and exchange center in Okinawa whose function is to conduct interdisciplinary and intercultural research projects useful for the building of a sustainable future and peace in the Asia Pacific region. This center would receive a sizable number of university and graduate students from the Asia Pacific region by providing a substantial amount of scholarships.

During the first part of the symposium, following the presentation of the current APC Proposal by the two co-leaders of the Proposal Team, a total of 6 discussants expressed their own views, opinions, concerns, and suggestions on the proposal from their own area of specialization. In the second part of the symposium, the coordinator of the symposium opened the discussion to the floor and as a result, quite a heated discussion prevailed among participants, including questions & answers, feasibility, exchange of opinions, and suggestions for future tasks. Furthermore, mention was made about the potential difficulty in the multicultural management of the center. The discussion of many topics continued enthusiastically throughout the symposium. We believe we were given some constructive suggestions and substantial homework for further improvement of the proposal.

During the social gathering party held at Lohas Café Ariake in the Ariake campus, a number of people continued discussing various issues over food and drinks. Toward the end of the party, we felt that the all party participants were experiencing a brief moment of excitement, with thoughts that the APC will become a reality.

We can say that the APC proposal made a small first step by engaging the public domain. We know we have mounting problems to solve, but we are determined to go forward to materialize our proposal in close cooperation with all who attended the symposium, not to mention those endorsers of our proposal who missed the symposium.
Thank you very much.
